The tower is the first to appear, a fairytale-like vision atop a gentle hill, hidden by a thick crown of swaying cypresses. The castle’s strong, fortress-like walls, come next… Castello di Pergolato is a unique historical venue and rare example of perfectly maintained Medieval architecture located in a striking position in the heart of the Chianti region, surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves.
The castle was built in the 10th century by the Buondelmonti family, feudal rulers of the surrounding area on the site of an ancient Roman settlement. Between 1450 and 1500 numerous structural and architectural features were modified, converting the imposing fortress-like building into a villa. More light filled the grand halls, and the stately sumptuous, function rooms were added for entertaining. The castle underwent centuries of eventful history, cared for by its loving inhabitants.
Restored periodically to maintain its one-of-a-kind architecture and artistic heritage, the Castle’s original structure, furnishings and dècor have in no way been altered or spoiled by the addition of up-to-date facilities and/or luxury amenities. The only concession to modernity is the convenient elevator, from ground to first floor. With no air-conditioning and no heating (apart from the fireplaces of course!) the castle appears to its visitors and guests today just as it used to be, ancient, authentic and magical.
The villa comprises a monumental ground floor, mezzanine floor and first floor and accommodates up to 20 guests in its charming 9 double and 2 single bedrooms. Each guestroom is different, all are full of genuine character and enhanced by period frescoes, ancient furniture and canopies. 7 of the double rooms have their own private bathroom – 6 ensuite, 1 adjacent – the other 2 double bedrooms share 1 bathroom, adjacent to both. The 2 single rooms also share 1 bathroom, adjacent to both.
One of the first floor bedrooms is accessible to the disabled and duly equipped. A disabled/injured guest may reach the first floor with the elevator and easily access the room. (Kindly note the rest of the villa and grounds are not all equipped to be disabled-accessible).
The common spaces are extensive and truly striking. The formal reception areas include a grand central hall, elegant dining room, and 3 sitting/living rooms, one on each floor. The great hall is a stunning monumental room: with its high ceilings and a aura of sumptuous elegance, it is the superb space for unforgettable parties or dining. The ground floor living room and dining room both have lovely ancient fireplaces and the kitchen, spacious and country-style, is charming. The first floor hosts most of the bedrooms, as well as a welcoming, spacious sitting/TV/playroom and a lovely terrace offering stupendous 360° views of the surroundings.
The estate comprises over 2000 square meters of luxuriant lawns and cultivated grounds. The villa itself is encased in a small, exquisite, fenced garden which comprises a lovely outdoor loggia. Typically Tuscan, this superb sheltered veranda-like space is ideal for alfresco dining, or simply relaxing. The garden is delightful and hosts a spellbinding swimming pool as well.
Ideal for large parties of discerning guests wishing to fully experience ancient Tuscan traditions, heritage and lifestyle in a truly striking and authentic locations, Castello di Pergolato is the perfect venue for multi-generational family reunions, friends’ get-togethers, and celebrating special occasion.
